FATUM (to love)
Photography & Creative Direction by Henry Plant
FATUM: poetic journey with film photography {to love} is a first of its kind poetry-narrative book featuring 200 pages of dualistic poetry and double exposure film photography. As a timeless modern love story, the book features sixty-eight
The poetry and dream-like double exposure photography complement each other in mood and metaphor, both capturing the dark and light of loss, longing, and finding the greatest beauty in toxic places. The dual works envelop themes of abandonment and loss, spirituality and hope, autonomous empowerment, and the ultimate supreme growth of self. The film photography is taken mostly on the streets of Downtown Los Angeles and Salton Sea during COVID-19.
A new creative direction
To develop FATUM, I unearthed forgotten skills from college, relearning how to shoot analog photography for the sole purpose of creating these images. I studied YouTube tutorials for shooting film and scanning at-home for authentic color. My goal was to create images that looked like dreams, without appearing forced. For this reason I selected to use expired film, double exposures, and novelty cameras. Although I had extensive experience imposing such effects digitally for the entertainment industry, I felt that digital photography would make the images appear unnatural.
